A GroupMe alternative for church small groups
Checked 2026-10-13
The short answer: If a small group only needs to chat, GroupMe is free and works. Synodo is for churches that want the study, leaders-only meeting guides, attendance and the conversation in one place, with the church able to see every group. Members get push notifications on their phone or computer, not text messages.
| Synodo | GroupMe | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Church small groups: the study, the meeting and the conversation together. | Group chat for any group of people. |
| Price | $49 a month per church, for unlimited groups and people. | Free. |
| Meeting content | A Member Guide and a leaders-only Leader Guide for every meeting. | Links and files posted in the chat. |
| Attendance and care | Attendance in seconds, and anyone who has missed two meetings or gone quiet surfaces with the reason. | Not part of a chat app. |
| The church’s view | A church admin sees every group, and invites and removes people. | Each chat belongs to whoever started it; the church sees it only if someone adds a staff member. |

Why do churches move small groups off GroupMe?
- The study lives somewhere else — a PDF, a printed sheet, a link — and the chat has no idea what this week’s meeting is.
- When a leader steps down, the group’s history and its members go with whoever owns the chat.
- Nobody at the church can see which groups are healthy and who has quietly stopped coming.
- A church-wide chat turns one announcement into two hundred replies.
What does Synodo do that a chat cannot?
It knows the group’s schedule and its study. A meeting reminder goes out the day before without anyone remembering to send it. A poll, a sign-up or an RSVP sits on the meeting it is about. “Seen by” shows a leader who has not read the change of plan, and one button reminds only them.
What should a church know before switching?
- Synodo costs money and GroupMe does not. It is priced per church, not per group or per person.
- Members get push notifications, so they need to install Synodo to their home screen on iPhone or Android, or allow notifications on a computer. There are no text messages.
- Some groups are happiest in a chat. Synodo works best when the church wants every group meeting around a shared study.
How hard is it to move a group?
Add the group, then invite its people by email, from a spreadsheet, or from Planning Center. Each person sets a password and lands in the group. The chat can keep going alongside until everyone is in.
